Apache Pulsar Client Basics

The Apache Pulsar Java Client APIs provide you with a quick and easy way to connect to an Apache Pulsar cluster and start publishing and consuming messages.  Let’s start learning about the power of the Java Client.  We will continue to learn about it during the course.

Client API:

  • Encapsulates Apache Pulsar’s client-sever communication protocol
  • Adds additional features using Apache Pulsar primitives
  • Exposes a simple and intuitive API for use by applications

Client libraries:

  • Queue (and retry) messages until acknowledged by the broker
  • Support transparent reconnection for load-balancing or connection failover
  • Provides connection pooling: multiple producers and consumers connect to a broker through a single connection
  • Provides batching: multiple messages from a single producer or consumer are sent together in a batch

Client API queueing capabilities:

  • Producers and consumers both have internal queues
  • Producer queues allow application code to continue execution while the client sends messages to the broker
  • Consumer queues store messages retrieved from the broker so they are readily available when the application is ready to consume the next message
