Overview

You will learn to install, configure, and manage a StreamNative Private Cloud Pulsar cluster using the licensed StreamNative Operator. Upon completion of the course, you will have gained a fundamental understanding of how Pulsar operates and be prepared to work with StreamNative if you have chosen to license StreamNative Private Cloud.

Intended Audience

This course is designed for technical architects and operational support personnel who need to install, configure, and manage StreamNative Private Cloud Pulsar clusters in their enterprise environment. The course also provides a foundational knowledge of OSS Apache Pulsar operations concepts.

Requirements

  • Be comfortable using terminal.
  • You will need permissions to install aws cli and kubectl on your machine to access the provided EKS kubernetes cluster. Please reach out to training at training-help@streamnative.io prior to the course start if you would like directions on installing and testing the required tooling.
  • No prior knowledge of kubernetes or using kubectl is required to complete the course.

Course Design

This courses uses a blended learning model that combines lectures, lab exercises, quizzes, and instructor-led sessions for questions and troubleshooting the labs.

You will have access to:

  • Up to 6 hours of self-paced learning and hands-on exercises daily for 3 days (total 18 hours of content)
  • Three one-hour sessions with the StreamNative Technical Trainer for questions and troubleshooting
  • Access to an EKS kubernetes cluster for completing lab exercises

Observability

  • Install Prometheus and Grafana

Hands-on Exercises

Hands-on exercises accompany lectures throughout the course to reinforce key concepts and provide you with experience completing major operations functions using the StreamNative Operator. Exercises are completed in a dedicated EKS kubernetes cluster provided by StreamNative. Completion of hands-on exercises is required to receive a certificate of completion. Exercises include:

  • Installation of OLM and StreamNative Operator
  • Provision a StreamNative Private Cloud Pulsar cluster
  • Install Prometheus and Grafana, monitor cluster with preconfigured Grafana dashboards
  • Cluster configuration using pulsar-admin (e.g. create tenants, configure message retention)
  • Cluster testing using pulsar-perf
  • Observe cluster behavior during the loss of a broker or bookie
  • Configure cluster for Kafka on StreamNative (KSN)
  • Enable geo-replication to a StreamNative Hosted Pulsar cluster
  • Configure and tune broker autoscaling
  • Upgrade a cluster and decommission a bookie using StreamNative Operator

Grading

To pass the course and receive your certificate of completion and badge, you must achieve a minimum overall score of 75%. Your grade consists of:

  • 25% Quizzes
  • 75% Hands-on Exercises

About the Instructors

Dustin Nest

Dustin specializes in the creation of engaging technical training content and serves as your Technical Trainer at StreamNative. He brings to StreamNative over seven years of experience in software technical support, debugging, and training content development. He has both a BS and PhD in Chemical Engineering, with additional training and experience in C++, C#, Java, JS, and React. Dustin is excited to be your guide and troubleshooting resource in this course as you learn about Apache Pulsar by creating your end-to-end application.

David Kjerrumgaard

David is a committer on the Apache Pulsar project and serves as a Developer Advocate for StreamNative with a focus on helping developers solve their streaming data challenges using Apache Pulsar. He has over 15 years of experience working with open source projects in the Big Data, Stream Processing, and Distributed Computing spaces. He earned both a BS and MS in Computer Science and Mathematics. David has presented at numerous conferences including ApacheCon, Pulsar Summit, Dataworks Summit, DataDay Texas, Big Data Day LA, and is the author of the book Pulsar in Action, and co-author of Practical Hive: A Guide to Hadoop’s Data Warehouse System. He lives in Nevada.
